The Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice (MOCJ) advises the Mayor and First Deputy Mayor on criminal justice policy and is the Mayor’s representative to the courts, district attorneys, defenders, and state criminal justice agencies, among others. The office designs, deploys, and evaluates citywide strategies to drive down crime, reduce unnecessary arrests and incarceration, and improve the system’s fairness. MOCJ works with law enforcement and city agencies, non-profits, foundations, and others to implement data-driven strategies that address current crime conditions, prevent offending, and build the strong neighborhoods that ensure enduring safety. To ensure effective results, the office draws on various disciplines, such as behavioral economics to “nudge” conduct and machine learning to develop reliable predictive analytics. Examples of MOCJ’s work include: • “Project Fast Track,” a comprehensive strategy to drive down gun violence in New York City through a targeted, system-wide focus on the limited number of individuals driving gun violence; • The Mayor’s Action Plan for Neighborhood Safety (MAP), a comprehensive initiative to reduce crime and strengthen neighborhoods in and around the 15 New York City Housing Authority developments that account for 20 percent of all violent crime in the City’s public housing; and • Justice Reboot, making the system fairer and more efficient by safely driving down the jail population. These reforms include reducing case processing times in the courts and making the summons process easier and more transparent.
THE OFFICE TO PREVENT GUN VIOLENCE (OPGV): The New York City Office to Prevent Gun Violence (OPGV), housed within the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice under the Office of Neighborhood Safety (ONS), is focused on synchronizing the city’s anti-gun violence initiatives while amplifying community based intervention/prevention services and employing technological solutions to end gun violence. Our mission is to create safe, empowered and interconnected communities utilizing a multitude of public safety strategies. This is accomplished by coordinating a series of violence intervention and supportive networks that are simultaneously operating across 21 communities across the 5 boroughs in neighborhoods that account for upwards of 50% of NYC’s shooting incidents. Collectively, this initiative is known as the Crisis Management System (CMS) and was launched by Mayor Bill de Blasio in 2014 as part of the city’s long-term plan to reduce violent crime in our neighborhoods. These initiatives respond to the individual, familial and community-based needs in historically disinvested, marginalized, and underserved communities of color that experience gun violence. Currently, over 50 community-based organizations are a part of this network, which focuses on violence prevention services utilizing the Cure Violence Model as its core and additional social service supports as its complements.
To enhance our efforts in preventing and responding to community violence, OPGV is seeking (2) Initiatives Managers to assist in the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of various activities related to the community engagement and culture change strategies of OPGV. The Initiatives Manager will provide administrative support and programmatic assistance and oversight across a variety of initiatives to reduce gun violence and engage community-based solutions. The Initiatives Manager will be responsible for monitoring the progress of our programs operated in partnership with multiple agencies and community based organizations; providing technical assistance; community organizing and network building and ensuring that key OPGV’s behavioral and cultural change initiatives are functioning effectively.Under the Supervision of the OPGV Leadership with some latitude for independent judgement, the Initiatives Manager will assist the OPGV team in professional and technical work performing the following tasks:
- Oversee the development of OPGV’s critical projects that bolster engagement and empowerment within community which includes the fiscal and programmatic oversight of programs.
- Implement strategic programming that is aligned to address the social determinants driving community violence and promote a culture safety consistent with OPGV’s mission and core values
- Manage ongoing prevention/intervention work related to the OPGV, including the supervision of borough specific initiatives and OPGV coordinators.
- Support OPGV leadership and staff in the development and management of anti-gun violence strategies, including but limited to; planning, monitoring, and execution;
- Cultivate and maintain excellent relationships with stakeholder groups, other government agencies, community non-profits, advocates, community members, and justice-involved individuals;
- Organize intervention and supportive service referrals and initiatives to address community needs; • Create reports, proposals, presentations, strategic plans and other written and/or oral materials as requested;
- Assist with leading community education, leading convening’s, trainings, and outreach to community groups and local service providers citywide;
- Represent MOCJ and effectively communicate and present OPGV’s mission in meetings with community stakeholders, government and elected officials, and business entities, among others; Collaborate with all service providers and outside agencies engaged with families for follow up and ensure consistency in the delivery of services;
- Support the activities of OPGV’s funded partners as well as city agency and elected officials through a presence at events and other functions.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND/OR QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree Preferred (social service, public administration, or related human service field).
- Two (2) years of full-time professional experience working with a public or private agency providing public health services; building community partnerships and working with inner city young adults; crisis intervention; referral and support.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Experience in youth/human development or social services field.
- Knowledge of evidence based violence prevention and anti-gun violence models.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to effectively work with government agencies and community based organizations.
- Excellent skills in organization, time management, and multi-tasking, including the ability to take initiative, problem solve, prioritize duties, be detail-oriented, balance competing priorities and meet deadlines, work independently and within a team structure in a fast-paced, high pressure environment while maintaining quality work performance.
