SUMMARY:The Academy for Community Behavioral Health: A Deeper Look at MI Skills: Reflections Getting It Right Together: From Understanding to Exploring Ambivalence
DESCRIPTION:The Academy for Community Behavioral Health\, part of the CUNY School of Professional Studies\, launched in June 2021 with funding from the Mayor’s Office of Community Mental Health and Mayor’s Office for Economic Opportunity. The Academy puts behavioral health tools in the hands of community-based organizations and others who have meaningful opportunities to start conversations and provide help.\n\nThis practice-intensive virtual workshop strengthens and expands how helpers use reflections in Motivational Interviewing. Participants will move beyond fear of ‘being wrong’ to embrace reflections as a collaborative tool for deeper understanding. \nThe workshop focuses on two critical applications: (1) listening deeply to understand another person and reflecting to show that understanding. We will explore how accurate understanding comes through collaboration with the speaker\, not perfection; and (2) using reflections strategically to help clients explore both sides of their ambivalence without rushing to resolution. \nThrough extensive practice\, participants will develop confidence and skills to apply in your daily practice\, regardless of MI experience level. \nCOURSE OBJECTIVES\nParticipants will: \n\nListen with the intent to understand rather than to respond\nFormulate reflections that demonstrate a deep understanding of client experience\nTake thoughtful risks with complex reflections without fear of ‘being wrong’\nUse reflections strategically to help clients explore both sides of their ambivalence\nRespond skillfully when reflections miss the mark\n\nWHAT TO EXPECT\nThis is a highly interactive virtual workshop; most of the session will be spent in practice exercises and debriefs guided by the instructor\, with minimal didactic content It emphasizes experiential learning through practice with real (not role-played) content. Participants will work in small groups in breakout rooms for multiple practice rounds with rotating roles. Participants should come prepared to practice skills with cameras and microphones on\, share authentic personal reflections\, and give/receive supportive feedback in their breakout groups. \nBecause this course is so interactive\, capacity is limited. Please only register at this time if you can commit to: \n\nAttend the full session\nParticipate on camera\nParticipate in small and large group practice activities and debriefs. This will require speaking using your computer microphone.\n\nIt is not possible to participate in this skill-building workshop off-camera or only via chat. \nELIGIBILITY\nAcademy courses are open to non-profit care providers who deliver social services or behavioral health care in New York City. \nThis includes\, but is not limited to\, staff of: community-based organizations\, government agencies\, and public hospitals\, along with members of mutual aid groups\, community gardens\, NYCHA resident committees\, and more. \nThis course is open to learners with any level of Motivational Interviewing (MI) experience\, including those who want to strengthen or refresh specific MI skills and those who are new to MI. \nLearners who complete this 2-hour course will receive a certificate of completion from the Academy.
