SUMMARY:The Academy for Community Behavioral Health: SBIRT (Screening\, Brief Intervention\, Referral to Treatment): Reimagining the Evidence-Based Practice to be More Person-Centered
DESCRIPTION:This three-part series will be a collaborative reimaging of the traditional SBIRT (Screening\, Brief Intervention\, Referral to Treatment) framework through a critical\, compassionate lens that centers client autonomy and recognizes the complex factors influencing substance use. Together we will challenge ourselves to move beyond conventional medical models\, exploring how we might develop more nuanced approaches that acknowledge diverse experiences of drug use and pathways to change. \nThe series begins by examining screening practices with a critical eye toward their cultural limitations and potential biases\, while introducing strength-based alternatives for assessing substance use patterns. In the second workshop\, participants develop brief intervention skills infused with the Drug\, Set\, Setting framework to create more holistic\, personalized conversations. The final session expands the concept of “treatment” beyond traditional services\, helping practitioners support clients in identifying meaningful next steps aligned with their own goals and realities. \nThroughout all sessions\, participants will explore practical communication tools that foster autonomy\, respect individual choice\, and create space for client-directed change. This collaboratively reimagined SBIRT approach will aim to balance evidence-based practices with critical awareness of their limitations\, offering a more inclusive\, effective framework for supporting diverse populations. \nCOURSE OBJECTIVES\nParticipants will: \n\nEvaluate traditional screening tools through a critical lens\, identifying their strengths\, limitations\, and potential biases\nDevelop alternative conversation approaches that compassionately assess substance use patterns and risks\nExplore brief intervention techniques that incorporate the Drug\, Set\, Setting framework\, allowing for more contextualized\, autonomy-supportive conversations about substance use change\nExpand your understanding of “referral to treatment” to encompass diverse pathways to wellbeing\nStrengthen conversation skills to support people in identifying meaningful next steps that align with their unique needs\, readiness\, and goals\nReflect on your current practices and biases related to substance use assessment and intervention\nIdentify specific opportunities to implement more person-centered\, culturally responsive approaches in your work\n\nThe Academy for Community Behavioral Health\, part of the CUNY School of Professional Studies\, launched in June 2021 with funding from the Mayor’s Office of Community Mental Health and Mayor’s Office for Economic Opportunity. The Academy puts behavioral health tools in the hands of community-based organizations and others who have meaningful opportunities to start conversations and provide help. \nApplications are due by October 20\, 2026.

SUMMARY:The Academy for Community Behavioral Health: Foundations of Care: Part of a Trauma-Informed Supervision Learning Path
DESCRIPTION:Foundations of Care is the first in a series of courses that prepares learners to advance trauma-informed supervision within NYC non-profit care settings. \nThis course recognizes the strain of persistent systemic inequities on NYC non-profit care providers and the communities you serve\, including experiences of stress\, primary and secondary trauma\, and loss. Supervisors are often called to support others through these complex challenges\, while navigating significant challenges themselves. \nFoundations of Care invites supervisors to cultivate practices that help protect against the impacts of stress and trauma\, including for nervous system regulation\, self-awareness\, and connecting to values and purpose. These practices serve as a foundation for offering a grounded and skillful supervisory presence to others. \nIf you have ever felt exhaustion\, a lack of motivation\, or cynicism; if there is a passion for the work that you no longer feel present to; if you have felt hopeless or helpless as you navigate changes – you are not alone. These experiences are common among care providers who respond to pain and injustice in their communities\, often with too few resources. \nOver 4 weeks\, supervisors will be guided to re-center or strengthen practices that nurture your wellness. Participants will explore unique stressors that non-profit care providers face; gain tools to transform common reactions to stress; and\, affirm your guiding values\, purpose\, and imaginative visions for the future. Together\, these tools will help you connect to both small steps and broader visions for advancing trauma-informed\, equity-centered practices. \nLEARNING PATH\nFoundations of Care is a prerequisite for Care-Centered Supervision\, the next course in a trauma-informed supervision learning path.  This learning path supports supervisors to become proficient in a range of trauma-informed practices\, so you can in turn model and share these with supervisees. These courses have been developed\, tested\, and refined with input from a cross-section of staff and supervisors from NYC community-based organizations (CBOs) and city agencies. \nWhile there are many paths to cultivate skills for self-awareness\, self-regulation\, and radical imagination\, we ask supervisors to complete Foundations of Care before Care-Centered Supervision to access shared practices\, concepts\, and language. Learners may enter Foundations of Care with a range of relevant prior experience; every learner’s background and insights will enrich these courses. \nAcademy courses center care for the well-being of helpers as foundational elements of trauma-informed care. We aim to address the high levels of stress\, trauma\, and loss experienced by NYC non-profit providers and the communities they serve. This includes experiences of collective trauma; historic and intergenerational trauma; race-based trauma; and\, vicarious or secondary trauma. \nWHAT TO EXPECT\nEach week will include group discussion and practicing tools that support your own wellness. Some sessions incorporate multimedia\, psychoeducation\, short readings\, and reflective writing. Participants will identify and practice tools for your own nervous system regulation\, self-awareness\, and wellness between sessions\, and discuss and reflect on these practices in the cohort. \nTo fully engage with course material and each other\, participants are asked to: \n\nJoin from a quiet\, private space.\nUse a desktop or laptop computer with updated Zoom. Due to the interactive nature of this course\, it is not possible to participate from a mobile phone.\nJoin and stay on camera for the duration of the session.\nBring any needed supplies (from readily available household items).\n\nApply by October 20\, 2026. \nThe Academy for Community Behavioral Health\, part of the CUNY School of Professional Studies\, launched in June 2021 with funding from the Mayor’s Office of Community Mental Health and Mayor’s Office for Economic Opportunity.
