Celebrating NYC Nonprofit Week

Every day, nonprofits across New York City help people access the resources and support they need to thrive. From basic needs and health services to education, career support, mentorship, and the arts, these organizations strengthen communities and help make our city safer

During NYC Nonprofit Week, we thank and celebrate these essential partners in our work: the community-based organizations across the five boroughs that work tirelessly to prevent justice-system involvement, support people returning from incarceration, and create pathways to stability and opportunity.

“Nonprofits are essential partners in serving New Yorkers and strengthening our city,” said Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice Director Deanna Logan. “They bring deep expertise, trusted relationships, and an understanding of what communities need to thrive. During NYC Nonprofit Week, we are proud to recognize the people and organizations whose work creates opportunity and helps make New York City safer.”

This week, Director Logan joined leaders from the Mayor’s Office of Nonprofit Services and the Department of Probation to visit Youth Justice Network (YJN) to meet with staff and present the organization with a certificate of appreciation recognizing its service to New Yorkers.

Each year, YJN supports over 800 young people and their families who have been impacted by the justice system, providing individualized advocacy, mentorship, education, and opportunities for personal growth and economic independence.

MOCJ’s research shows just 9% of YJN participants were rearrested within six months of enrollment, compared with a citywide rate of 34%. Within one year, the rate of rearrest for YJN participants was 13%, compared with a citywide rate of 53%.

Our nonprofit providers — like YJN — show what is possible when government and community-based partners work together: helping New Yorkers build stronger futures while making our communities safer for everyone.
