Addiction Technology Transfer Center: Ethical Decision-Making & Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) Integration in Social Work

September 11 @ 9:00 am – 12:30 pm
Free

The purpose of this event is to examine the ethical opportunities and challenges associated with the use of artificial intelligence (AI), chatbots, and digital companions in social work and healthcare settings. This training will explore how AI-powered technologies are increasingly being used to support communication, mental health, aging, care coordination, and patient engagement, while also raising important ethical considerations related to privacy, partiality, informed consent, autonomy, safety, and the best health outcomes. Participants will discuss the role of social workers in shaping the responsible design, implementation, and evaluation of AI technologies, particularly among various populations who have otherwise fallen through the cracks of receiving care.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Describe the emerging role of artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots and digital companions in social work and healthcare settings.
  • Identify ethical considerations associated with AI technologies, including privacy, confidentiality, informed consent, partiality, safety, and better health outcomes.
  • Examine the potential benefits and risks of using AI chatbots to support mental health, aging, patient engagement, and social connection among vulnerable populations.
  • Apply ethical decision-making principles to real-world scenarios involving AI-enabled communication and digital mental health technologies in social work practice and research.
