JTI Presents – Understanding the Domestic Violence Survivors Justice Act
The Survivors Justice Project (SJP) is a collective of activists, lawyers, social workers, students, and researchers—many of whom are survivors themselves—working for the decarceration of domestic violence survivors.
This webinar focuses on the Domestic Violence Survivors Justice Act (DVSJA) and strategies for supporting survivors who have been arrested, prosecuted, or incarcerated. Participants will learn: The organizing history behind DVSJA, including the survivor-led advocacy and legislative campaign that led to its passage. The law’s purpose and scope within New York State’s criminal legal system. Sentencing relief under DVSJA, including eligibility, statutory criteria, and reduced sentencing ranges. How DVSJA is applied at the time of sentencing. Post-conviction relief options and pathways for currently incarcerated individuals. Next steps after identifying an eligible client, including referrals and coordination with defense counsel. How to support clients in developing effective narratives for sentencing and resentencing. The role of expert witnesses and interdisciplinary support.
