New York City’s short-term rental registration law (Local Law 18) established a program to bolster decades-old housing laws at a time when illegal rentals online were depleting the city’s housing stock.
September 2026 marks the three-year anniversary of online booking companies coming into compliance with Local Law 18, helping the city end widespread abuse of longstanding laws protecting renters and the rental market.
The NYC Mayor’s Office of Special Enforcement, which is housed at the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice, just released a pair of short-term rental reports that reveal how more New Yorkers than ever are taking advantage of legal hosting:
– A record-high 3,500+ registrations were active in the last year.
– New data shows homeowners (76%) and 1- or 2-family homes (68%) comprise the majority of registrations.
Thanks to the registration program, New York City and OSE are helping to keep rent-regulated units off the vacation rental market. That number has grown in past year, marking progress in educating hosts and bringing them into compliance with the city’s highly protective housing laws.
Other findings in this year’s annual reports included two-thirds (67%) of summonses for violations issued to corporate entities (such as an LLC) that owned the properties (compared to 33% issued to individuals).
